Osaka on Fire: Japan’s First Women’s Singles Grand Slam Final

Date
07 September 2018

New York, USA – The 20-year old Naomi Osaka (JPN) has done it. Becoming the first person of Japanese descent to reach a Grand Slam Women’s singles Final. Her post interview showed she was in high spirits following the win, when asked how she saved an astonishing 13 break points, “I really want to play Serena” she excitedly retorted.

The path to the 6-2, 6-4 victory wasn’t an easy one, with both Women exchanging powerful serves in the second set. Ultimately Osaka’s composure throughout set the tone for the match as Keys unforced errors proved to be her undoing.

Osaka’s next match thrust her into the final with a much-anticipated rematch with the six-time US Open winner Serena Williams (USA) Sunday. Last time the two met, Osaka stunned Williams, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the Miami Open earlier this year.

In Women’s doubles news, CoCo Vandeweghe and Timea Babo’s respective pairs both edged out their opponents to advance. Their next meeting will be the fourth time in 2018 for an action-packed rematch Monday.
