Naomi Osaka back as World No.1

Date
12 August 2019

Team Yonex superstar Naomi Osaka (JPN) returned to the top of the WTA Rankings released today after an impressive showing at the Rogers Cup in Canada. The Japanese 21 year old, using her new Limited Edition Gold EZONE 98 racquet for the first time, reached the quarter finals in Toronto, bettering the results of her other opponents vying to regain the Number One spot. This resulted in Osaka returning to the summit of the WTA Rankings after an eight week absence, reclaiming a position she held for 18 consecutive weeks following her win at the Australian Open in January of this year.

To celebrate Osaka’s historic rise to the top of the WTA rankings earlier this year, Yonex released the EZONE Limited Edition racquet, a gold racquet designed in collaboration with Osaka. With only 10,000 racquets produced worldwide, this unique racquet stands out amongst the crowd. Osaka debuted the commemorative racquet in the tournament here and was clearly happy to have played herself back into some form, saying that she 'can't wait to play more matches' in the upcoming months.

Osaka remains the first and only Asian female player to ever top the WTA Rankings after a truly remarkable couple of years. Back in 2018, she became the first woman from Japan to win a Grand Slam after a famous victory over Serena Williams (USA) in New York to win the US Open. One Grand Slam quickly became two as she carried over her fine form into 2019, crowning off a stunning rise to the top of Women’s tennis by claiming the Australian Open in January this year.
