Kento Momota is the new men’s World Number One!

27 September 2018

Sept. 27, 2018 — Kento Momota has capped an epic comeback run today, as BWF announced its new World Rankings, and Momota sits at the very top. He becomes the first Japanese man ever to obtain badminton’s top ranking.

Momota’s comeback story has been nothing short of incredible. After reaching World No. 4 in 2016, he found himself ranked 282 upon his return to the sport in July of 2017. Unable at that rank to qualify for Superseries tournaments, he had to work his way through the Challenger circuit in order to begin to compete at the top level again.

However, in just over the span of a year, through unwavering determination, Momota has climbed to the pinnacle of badminton success, with wins at badminton’s premiere events, including the World Championships this past August, as well as the Indonesian Open and Japan Open.

While he’s stated that his eventual goal is a Gold Medal at the 2020 Olympics — hosted in Tokyo — for now he’s taking each tournament in stride. Yonex is happy to congratulate him on his achievement and looks forward to his future dazzling displays of talent and success.
